Related Tags: Linking Tags

Premise: Blake is looking for records related to his court case “ACME vs. Blake”. He lands on Suppl#12 and filters for Tag “ACME vs. Blake”. However, he knows there are more related Records, with Tag “Legal”. He is looking for an easy way to create a link between those two Tags.

How-To: “Related Tags” to the rescue! Blake revisits his list of Tags with Suppl#24. He finds Tag “ACME vs. Blake” and he clicks on its row, under column “Related Tags”. The “Related Tags” Toggle opens as in Suppl#26. In there, Blake simply adds Tag “Legal” in the list, effectively creating a “link” between the two Tags.

The “link” is bidirectional. To confirm, Blake finds Tag “Legal” in his list of Tags, in Suppl#24 and open its “Related Tags” Toggle. Indeed, “ACME vs. Blake” is indeed listed as a related tag for “Legal”.

Blake attempts his original search for records related to his court case “ACME vs. Blake”. He is on Suppl#12. This time, in Filters he enables “Lookup Related Tags” and in “Tags” he starts typing “ACME…”. The list now includes both “ACME vs. Blake” and “Legal”. He is therefore reminded that related records exist not only with Tag “ACME vs. Blake” but also with Tag “Legal”. He chooses one of the two, “ACME vs. Blake”. The list of Records now shows ONLY records with Tag “ACME vs. Blake”. Equally, had he chosen Tag “Legal” from the Tags Filter lookup list, the Records list would have shown ONLY records with Tag “Legal”.

Variation: Include all Records of related Tags in a single list.

Premise: Blake wishes to display ALL Records related to his court case (namely Records of both Tags “ACME vs. Blake” and “Legal”) on a single screen.

How-To: Black uses Advanced Record Search, as in Suppl#37. The critical action he takes here is enabling the option “Include Records of related Tags”. Then, all he needs to do is choose just one of the related Tags in the Tag criteria, without the need to remember which other Tags are related to the one he chose to search on:

Tags Must include ALL of the following tags: “Legal”.

The search results (Suppl#39) will include all records of Tag “Legal”, as well as all records of Tag “ACME vs. Blake”, because the latter is related to “Legal”.

Notably, the searching is NOT executing on a recursive basis. In other words, if Tag “ACME vs. Blake” is related to other Tags (other than “Legal”) then records of those other Tags are NOT included in the search. “Related Tags” applies only on Tags included explicitly under the “Tags” Search Criteria.
